How to Acclimate Your Jellyfish!

When your new jellies arrive, acclimating them properly is key to their health and well-being. 🪼Jellyfish are very sensitive to sudden changes in water temperature and chemistry, so don’t rush this process! Start by floating the sealed bag in your tank for about 30 minutes. This allows the temperature in the bag to slowly match your tank water. Then, over the course of another 30–60 minutes, gradually add small amounts of tank water to the bag. This step lets your jellies adjust to the salinity and pH of their new home. Once the parameters are similar, gently release them into the tank. A slow and steady acclimation process ensures your jellies have the best start in their new environment!

Step By Step:

Acclimating your new jellyfish properly is essential for their health and well-being. Here's a step by step guide to help you through the process:

  1. Unpack and InspectUpon receiving your jellyfish, open the package and inspect the condition of the jellyfish while they are still sealed in their shipping bags. Take a clear photo of the jellyfish in the sealed bag; this is important for any potential health guarantees.

  2. Adjust to Room Temperature: Place the sealed bag containing the jellyfish next to your aquarium and let it sit for 1-2 hours. This allows the water in the bag to slowly adjust to room temperature, reducing temperature shock.

  3. Prepare for Acclimation: Designate a clean container or cup exclusively for aquarium use to avoid contamination. Ensure your aquarium has been properly cycled and that water parameters, including salinity and temperature, are within the appropriate ranges for jellyfish.

  4. Transfer Jellyfish to Acclimation Bag: Carefully transfer the jellyfish from their shipping bags into a larger acclimation bag. To do this, create a small opening in the shipping bag and gently pour the jellyfish into the acclimation bag, being cautious to avoid any damage.

  5. Float the Acclimation Bag: Place the acclimation bag with the jellyfish into your aquarium, allowing it to float. This helps equalize the temperature between the bag and the tank water.

  6. Gradual Water Introduction: Every 10 minutes, add approximately 1/4 cup of your aquarium's water into the acclimation bag. Repeat this process for at least one hour. This gradual introduction helps the jellyfish adjust to the new water chemistry.

  7. Release Jellyfish into the Aquarium: After the acclimation period, gently submerge the acclimation bag in the aquarium and allow the jellyfish to swim out on their own. Avoid pouring them directly to prevent injury.

  8. Monitor and Feed: Observe your jellyfish over the next 24-72 hours as they acclimate to their new environment. It's normal for them to swim less or behave differently during this time. Begin feeding them 24 hours after acclimation, following recommended feeding guidelines.
